Born in Havana, Cuba in 1963, Jorge Pardo studied at the University of Illinois, Chicago and received his BFA from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. The recipient of a 2010 MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship, Pardo’s practice explores the intersection of contemporary painting, design, sculpture, and architecture. His paintings, sculptures, and installations have been exhibited at numerous national and international venues, including the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum; Palais des Beaux Arts, Lille, France; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Museum of Modern Art, New York; and Tate Modern, London. Employing a broad palette of vibrant colors, eclectic patterns, and natural and industrial materials, he often transforms familiar objects into artworks with multiple meanings and purposes. This Untitled vase, made especially for The Bronx Museum of the Arts, is a self-portrait of the artist, glazed in various grey and blue hues, making each a unique work.
