Jamel Shabazz Book Signing

The Bronx Museum of the Arts proudly presents its monthly First Wednesday book signings featuring Bronx–based writers and/or books about the Bronx.

The series kicks off with a book signing for famed street photographer Jamel Shabazz, who is currently being honored with an exhibition by The Bronx Museum’s Teen Council.  Shabazz will be signing his three publications “Back in the Days”, “A Time Before Crack”, and “Seconds of My Life”.

Salsa Profunda (Deep Salsa)

The Bronx Museum is proud to present Salsa Profunda (Deep Salsa), a project by artist collective Areytos, featuring performances and visual art by youth from the Citizens Advice Bureau and guest artists Sita Frederick, Rodney Lopez, Renan A. Morales, Priscilla Renta, Tina Vasquez, Will Villegas, Jose Ortiz, and Aaron Lazansky-Oliva. Reception to follow.

Join The Bronx Museum for MomZ Rock,” an artisans and craft fair for Mother’s Day, featuring one-of-a-kind gifts such as scarves, handkerchiefs, hats and much more – made and sold by noted female graffiti artists and their mothers.

A Day of Collaborative Performance

Contemporary collectives do outrageous Work! A day long performance at the Museum featuring The Brainstormers (in collaboration with the Guerrilla Girls), Christal Brown and INSPIRIT, 6+, Ridykeulous, Broadband, and much, much more....        

Performance Day Schedule of Events:                  

12:00-12:30pm – The Waitresses "All Waitresses Marching-Band Parade".  A march up the Grand Concourse from 161st St. to the Bronx Museum of the Arts' North Wing Entrance

12:00-2:30pm – Christal Brown/INSPIRIT  with "Project: Becoming: On Display."  Group forms living sculptures; featured interacting with exhibited art works.  Location: North Wing lobby and galleries.
 
12:00-3:00pm – 6+:  "Walking Bethlehem".  An interactive travel tour via webcam of the Holy Land.  Location: North Wing 2nd Floor Alcove.
 
12:00-6:00pm – Ridykeulous:  "That Looks Really Cute On You!" Group builds plaster and found-object sculpture, with various interruptions, constructions, presentations and surprises and accompaniment of the band Legends.  Location: South Wing lobby.
 
1:00-3:00pm – GuerrillaGirlsBroadband "Feminist Recruiting Center".  Anti-war counter-recruits will be enlisted and given ID cards.  Location: North Wing lobby.
 
1:30-3:30pm – The Brainstormers (in collaboration with GuerrillaGirls).  Satiric demonstration in front of museum protesting gender inequities.  Location: North Wing entrance.
 
3:00-3:15pm – Christal Brown/INSPIRIT  and Project: Becoming perform.  Location: North Wing - 2nd Floor.
 
3:15-4:00pm – Spiderwoman Theater Retrospective performance.  Location: North Wing - 2nd Floor.
 
4:00-5:00pm – The Waitresses "Unhappy Hour".  Serving drinks and snacks.  Men pay $1, women 77 cents.  Location: North Wing 2nd Floor.
 
5:00-5:30pm –  Ridykeulous: "That Looks Really Cute On You!"  Group destroys sculpture. Featuring: Legends, Dr. Laurie Weeks, Nicola Tyson, Celeste Dupuy-Spencer and special surprise guests.  Location: South Wing lobby.

AIM28: How Soon Is Now? Opening

Join The Bronx Museum for the launch of the 28th annual of its Artist in the Marketplace (AIM) program.  Meet and greet the new crop of 36 fledging artists who will no doubt make an impact in the art world.

Panel Discussion:  Grand Concourse: Cultural Crossroads
North Wing—2nd Floor
Admission: $5.00, free for Bronx Museum members

Panel on grassroots initiatives that foster and promote dialogue among diverse populations and how the Grand Concourse serves as an axis drawing new waves of immigrant communities.

Featuring Gail Nathan (Bronx River Art Center), Kellie Terry-Sepulveda (The Point), Charles Rice-Gonzales (BAAD). Moderated by Holly Block (Executive Director, Bronx Museum of the Arts).

 A walking tour of the neighborhood led by Sam Goodman will start at 11am promptly. Reservations requested at 718-681-6000 ext. 132

QUEERHOOD 2008: A Cultural Celebration of LGBT Pride in the Bronx
North Wing – 2nd Floor

Free with Museum admission

Join The Bronx Museum of the Arts in the second annual June Pride program to celebrate and recognize LGBT diversity in the borough. Produced by AIM 2007 artist and director of CINEMAROSA, Hector Canonge, the event will feature film screenings, poetry readings, and performances by artists whose work relate to LGBT lives and experiences in the Bronx and NYC at large.  Music and visuals will be hosted by a local DJ. Light refreshments will be served.
