The New York Yankees and the American Dream

The Bronx Museum of the Arts and the Queens Museum of Art present a pair of exhibitions illuminating two of baseball's most storied franchises, The New York Yankees and the New York Mets. Subway Series is an unprecedented celebration of the rich connection between baseball and New York, and furthermore between the two art museums and the teams with which they share a subway stop.

Subway Series: The New York Yankees and the American Dream chronicles the history of the New York Yankees through contemporary artworks, revered memorabilia, sports photography, and baseball cartoons.

The exhibition takes its name from inter-borough competitions during the fall classic and the initiation of inter-league play in 1997. Subway Series promises to capture the spirit of the game, the passions of the multi-generational fans, and the distinctly local vernacular of baseball itself.

While the histories of the Yankees and the Mets are unique, Subway Series charts each team’s transformation over the years, featuring images and objects: art and non-art.

Leading figures in contemporary art address the longstanding traditions of New York baseball. Several new commissioned works (including stadium-based projects), revered memorabilia from private and public collections from around the country, photography, baseball cartoons, and other materials documenting key moments in each team’s history are exhibited.
