Co-Lab is an interdisciplinary residency program intended to deepen local exposure to dance, celebrate the borough’s rich legacy with choreography, and foster connections to up-and-coming talent. For their open studio series, BxMA Co-Lab dance resident Zavé Martohardjono and visual artist Shani Peters will showcase their collaborative project. The project explores lived political resistance in the body through dance, as well as considers shared cultural spaces as sites for release, joy, affirmation, self-care, and self-reflection.
Zavé Martohardjono is an interdisciplinary artist interested in geopolitics, social justice, queer glam, and embodied healing. Among many venues, they’ve performed at BAAD!, Boston Center for the Arts, Center for Performance Research, Gibney Dance, Issue Project Room, Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery, Movement Research at Judson Church, Panoply Performance Laboratory, Recess, Storm King Art Center, and the Wild Project. Previous to the 2017 BxMA Co-Lab residency, Zavé has residencies at Gibney Dance Work Up 3.0 (2017), The Shandaken Project at Storm King (2016), La MaMa (2016), Chez Bushwick (2015), was a Lambda Literary Fellow (2015), and participated in BAX’s NEEDING IT (2013) and the Hemispheric Institute’s EMERGENYC (2011).
Shani Peters (b. 1981 Lansing, MI) is a multi-disciplinary artist based in New York City. Her practice encompasses community building, activism histories, the subversion of popular media, and the creation of accessible imaginative experiences. Peters holds a B.A. from Michigan State University and an M.F.A. from the City College of New York. Her exhibitions and presentations in the United States and abroad include the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in New York City; the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI; Seoul Art Space Geumcheon in South Korea; and the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Harare. Selected residencies include those hosted Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, the Laundromat Project, and Project Row Houses, as well as a residency in Seoul, South Korea sponsored by apexart. Peters’ work has been featured in the Art Papers magazine and the New York Times. Her work is recognized and supported by several awards and grants from institutions such as the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, the Rauschenberg Foundation, Rema Hort Mann Foundation, and the Joan Mitchell Foundation. Peters is an educator, focusing her teaching at the intersection of art and politics.
