ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Jorge A. Valdes (JAVA), born in 1956, is a Cuban American and self-taught artist living in New York since 1992. His use of found objects and broken china traces back to his youth in Cuba as a resourceful solution to the scarcity of supplies. In 1992, JAVA moved to Miami where in reaction to the abundance, unwanted material in his work became even more subjective and magical. Later, he completed a Masters in Education at Columbia University and continues his creations with recyclable materials and through educational programming and workshops.
Anthony Matulis has a broad background in many creative industries. Matulis studied music performance and education at The University of Texas at Austin, worked in the Hollywood movie industry for ten years, and finally, worked with Valdes for the past ten years in Manhattan, Brooklyn and The Bronx on public art projects and workshops. Matulis is "right at home" working with the public on the visual arts and education.
