EDUCATOR WORKSHOPS

LEARN TO READ ART
Have your ever wondered why an object is considered a work of art?  Have you ever walked into a gallery and thought, “Well, I could have done that”? Learn to Read Art explores the ideas behind the art and how you can bring others into a conversation about the artwork. During this workshop, educators will take part in exercises on how looking at art can develop one’s critical thinking skills. Participants will also learn how to analyze and generate discussion about works in one of the exhibitions on view, as well as those of artists featured in the Bronx Museum Interview Series. In-gallery and hands-on art-making projects in our studio will complete the experience.

THEATER FOR THE EVERYDAY
Grounded in the philosophy of Augusto Boal, creator of Forum Theater and author of Theater of the Oppressed, this intensive workshop is designed to help teachers and teaching artists to approach conflict in creative ways. Facilitated by George Emilio Sanchez, Assistant Professor of Dramatic Arts at the College of Staten Island, the workshop is structured around exercises that emphasize one’s power to listen and trust as the basis for a real dialogue. In a relaxed and safe setting, the entire group is encouraged to engage in games and role playing that emphasize problem-solving and critical thinking. Besides providing basic information on the development and usefulness of various techniques, each workshop demonstrates, step-by-step, a series of exercises and games that address group dynamics and facilitate dialogue. The workshop’s main goal is to encourage participants to face problems in creative ways by integrating an element of “play” into their practice, in the classroom and beyond.
