Cultural After-School Adventures (CASA) serves 5th grade students from P.S.73. During sessions, students read classic work of literature, visit the Museum's current exhibits, and synthesize their experience through puppet-making and other smaller projects inspired by the themes and imagery. At the program's conclusion, students participate in a puppet parade from the school and to the nearby New York Restoration Project Target Bronx Community Garden, where even more of their artwork is showcased.
This spring, CASA participants explored the poetry of Chilean poet Pablo Neruda. Because P.S.73 is a dual language school with many bilingual and English language learners, we chose to focus on a Latin American author whose work was originally written in Spanish. Neruda's magical poetry inspired wonderfully imaginative drawings, paintings and puppets.
This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and New Your City Council Member Vanessa L. Gibson.
